What this set actually is
An automatic table has a hopper under the surface. At the end of a hand you push the tiles into the centre, the top opens, the tiles drop, and a minute later four built walls rise out of the table while the previous set was being shuffled underneath. The time saved is roughly a third of the evening.
They are heavy and they need power, so the folding version is the one worth buying for a home: the top folds vertically, and the castors let one person move it. Check the folded footprint against your storage space before ordering, not after.
The tiles are magnetic and table-specific. A standard set will not shuffle in it. Most tables ship for Chinese 144-tile or Riichi 136-tile play; an American set needs a table listed as "American mode" or "166 tiles", because the eight jokers change the wall length. Shipping on an item this size is a real cost and usually arrives by freight, so read the delivery section of the listing carefully.
What sets it apart
- Two tile sets: while one is in play the other is shuffling underneath
- Folding frame with wheels — the only way a table this heavy fits a family home
- Plays Chinese and Riichi; American 166-tile sets need a special American-mode table
Who should buy it
Groups that play weekly and would rather play hands than shuffle them.
