What this set actually is
A Chinese set is 144 tiles: three suits of 36, the winds and dragons, and eight flower and season tiles. It plays Chinese Official, Hong Kong, Taiwanese (which uses 16-tile hands) and most regional variants without any additions.
Tile size in this category is quoted as a number — 32, 34, 36, 38, 40 — which is roughly the tile height in millimetres. Size 36 is the one to default to: large enough to read and handle comfortably, small enough that four walls fit on a normal table. Size 40 and above are display sets as much as playing sets.
Look for engraved characters. Printed sets are cheaper and the ink on the one-bamboo bird and the red dragon is the first thing to wear, usually within a year of weekly play.
What sets it apart
- Standard "36" tile size — what most Chinese tables and mats are built around
- Engraved rather than printed characters, so the paint does not wear off
- No Arabic numerals, which is correct for the variant but means learning the characters
Who should buy it
First Chinese set for a household, or a club set that will see heavy use.
